Metal Gear Solid 4 Database was released free of charge on the PlayStation Store just after MGS4's release. Retail discs available from August 2012 are updated with the 2.0 patch. The game was released exclusively on PlayStation 3 on Jand unlike other numbered MGS entries, has not received an updated release (á la Integral, Substance or Subsistence), nor a release on any other platform. A new Metal Gear Online game was included on the MGS4 disc (before later getting a standalone retail release in Japan), but was shut down on June 12, 2012. While serving as a direct narrative sequel to MGS2, most gameplay elements from MGS3 such as the 3D camera, CQC, and camouflage return, along with new features and a variety of new settings including active battlefields.
It was intended as the conclusion of the Metal Gear Solid story, a fact that was played up throughout the game's marketing - most trailers showed Snake seemingly committing suicide at the conclusion of his mission.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots takes place in 2014, around 5 years after the events of MGS2, and sees an aged Solid Snake (now dubbed 'Old Snake') on his final mission to stop Liquid Ocelot and his PMC armies once and for all.
